Magnetic Locks vs Electric Strikes

When securing a door or gate with access control, the locking mechanism is just as important as the keypad or reader. The two most common options are magnetic locks (maglocks) and electric strikes. Here's how they compare.

Magnetic Locks (Maglocks)

An electromagnet mounted on the door frame holds a metal plate on the door. When powered, the magnet holds the door shut with incredible force.

  • Holding force: 300kg to 600kg+ — extremely strong
  • Fail-safe: Unlocks when power is lost (safe for fire exits)
  • Best for: Glass doors, gates, high-security applications
  • Pros: No moving parts, very reliable, easy to install on any door type
  • Cons: Requires constant power, needs backup battery/UPS

Electric Strikes

Replaces the standard door strike plate. When activated, it releases the latch — allowing the door to open without turning the handle.

  • Holding force: Varies by model — generally less than maglocks
  • Fail-secure: Stays locked when power is lost (good for security)
  • Best for: Internal doors, office doors, existing door frames
  • Pros: Works with existing door hardware, lower power consumption
  • Cons: More complex installation, may not suit all door types

Which Should You Choose?

  • Gates and external doors: Magnetic locks — stronger, weather-resistant
  • Internal office doors: Electric strikes — neat, works with existing hardware
  • Fire exits: Magnetic locks — fail-safe means they unlock in emergencies
  • High-security areas: Magnetic locks — maximum holding force
